چکیده

As process technology scales, both fabrication induced and in-operation hard faults will become more prevalent, limiting yield and effective product lifetime. The simultaneous emergence of chip multiprocessors (CMPs) and revitalization of machine virtualization offers several opportunities for hard failure tolerance. In this paper, we provide preliminary analysis of methods for lifetime recoverability on CMPs which contain partially functional execution cores. Specifically, we examine how processor virtualization can help a CMP architecture architecture overcome faults by migrating computation or virtualizing functionality which cannot be supported by the hardware as a result of failure.

Thermal Design Space Exploration of 3D Die Stacked Multi-core Processors Using Geospatial-Based Predictive Models

This paper presents novel 2D geospatial-based predictive models for exploring the complex thermal spatial behavior of three-dimensional (3D) die stacked multi-core processors at the early design stage. Unlike other analytical techniques, our predictive models can forecast the location, size and temperature of thermal hotspots. We evaluate the efficiency of using the models for predicting within...

Exploring Performance and Power Scaling in Multi-Core Processors

The demand for lower power over higher performance processors has increased over the past few years, leading to multi-core architectures. The current trend being favoring few powerful cores over a larger number of simpler, smaller cores. We address the tradeoff between these two design decisions by considering Pollack’s Rule for single cores and applying it with Amdahl’s law to multi-core archi...

Predictable and high performance multi-core architectures

Multi-core architectures will provide the computational power needed to the high performance hard real-time systems. Typically, multi-core architectures employ shared resources to reduce cost by decreasing chip area and package size, and to exchange data (for example, shared memory). The interference on the shared resources makes the execution time of applications running on these architectures...

An Asymptotic Performance/Energy Analysis and Optimization of Multi-core Architectures

In this paper, we develop asymptotic analysis models for better understanding the performance and energy consumption characteristics of multi-core processor architectures using Amdahl’s law in order to foresee their performance and energy impacts for given workload characteristics (e.g. available parallelism). Through the asymptotic analysis and optimization based on the models proposed in this...

Magellan: A Framework for Fast Multi-core Design Space Exploration and Optimization Using Search and Machine Learning

As multi-core processor architectures with tens or even hundreds of cores, not all of them necessarily identical, become common, the current processor design methodology, that relies on large-scale simulations, is not going to scale well because of the number of possibilities to be considered. We need intelligent/efficient techniques to navigate through the processor design space. In this paper...
